What’s New on TV for January

Winter TV is back stronger than ever with a line-up of mid-season and new series premieres. Here are some of the most anticipated TV premieres for the month of January:

Roswell, New Mexico – Series Premiere
Tuesday, January 15, 9 PM  Showcase

Reboot of 1999’s alien drama Roswell, will now throw undocumented immigrants and intergalactic extraterrestrials together in the American South West. This reboot comes from Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec meaning we can expect many CW friendly make-out sessions.


This is Us – Season 3 Winter Premiere
Tuesday, January 15, 9 PM  CTV

Everyone’s weepy favourite picks up after one of the series’ most shocking cliffhangers yet – that Jack’s younger brother, who had allegedly died in Vietnam, is actually well and alive in Pennsylvania. Through flash forwards, we also learned that Beth is a dance teacher in the future and there are several other notable shocking developments for the Pearson family.


Dynasty – Season 2 Winter Premiere
Friday, January 18, 8 PM  CW

Dynasty is a telenovela and another reboot. The show picks up after its action-packed mid-season finale — where a nanny kidnapped an already-kidnapped baby, who also almost fell off a high-rise; Jeff is shot presumably fatally as he flees the FBI, and Steven never made it to his plane home for the holidays. Lots to unpack here.


Brexit – TV Movie
Saturday, January 19, 9 PM  HBO

Go behind the scenes of UK’s 2016 historic referendum to leave the European Union and the data-driven tactics of the ‘Vote Leave’ campaign that brought home a political victory. This TV movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dominic Cummings, who spear-headed the ‘Vote Leave’ campaign.


Black Monday – Series Premiere
Sunday, January 20, 10 PM  Crave

Black Monday will fill the dark, greed-loving Succession shaped hole in your heart. New comedy centers around 1987’s ‘Black Monday’ when the stock market crashed, leading to the worst days in Wall Street history.


Suits – Season 8
Wednesday, January 23, 10 PM  Bravo

TV’s favourite law firm is back bigger than ever for its eighth season. With two new name partners, the firm is now Zane Spector Litt Wheeler Williams.


Siren – Season 2
Thursday, January 24, 8 PM ABC Spark

This mermaid tale is anything but a fairy tale – in its second season, the battle between man and sea takes a dangerous turn as these predators seek to claim their birthright in the town of Bristol Cove.


Amanda Seales: I Be Knowin’ – Special
Saturday, January 26, 10 PM HBO

I Be Knowin’ is Amanda Seales stand up debut in a one-hour long special on HBO, described by Seales herself as “37 years of finding the funny”. Seales is a series regular in Insecure as Tiffany, has guest-starred on Black-ish and hosts a weekly podcast Small Doses.
