What’s New on TV for September

The fall TV season is well underway and the September TV premieres show no signs of stopping. From new medical dramas to critically acclaimed sitcoms, here are some of the most anticipated TV premieres (new and returning series) for the month of September:

Kidding, Season 1 – Showtime,TMN
September 9, 10 pm

Kidding reunites Jim Carrey with the director of one of his best films Michael Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). This Showtime series follows Mr. Pickles, a beloved children’s TV icon, who has been living in his own world of fairy tales and puppet and struggles to cope when his family life rapidly begins to implode.


The Great Canadian Baking Show, Season 2 – CBC
September 19, 8 pm

10 new bakers will enter the tent but only one will be crowned Canada’s best baker.


Anne with an E – Season 2, CBC
September 23, 7 pm

Based on the beloved novel, Anne’s world of Green Gables becomes a bigger place, with new faces, more heartfelt lessons about love, loss and growing up. Anne with an E comes back for its second season to remind us that the biggest adventure is being yourself.


Manifest, Season 1 –  NBC, Citytv
September 24, 10 pm

MH370 conspiracy theorists will rejoice with this new series. Manifest follows various passengers of a flight that departs in 2013 with some turbulence only to land over 5 years later in 2018, seemingly never having left airspace.


The Gifted, Season 2 – FOX, Citytv
September 25, 8 pm

Set in an alternate timeline where the X-Men have disappeared, mutated humans are treated with distrust and fear. An institute for mutants aims to achieve peaceful co-existence with humanity. Following the destruction of the mutant’s underground base at the end of the first season, this season picks up with the mutants hiding in plain site. For X-Men fans, this season also explores the Hellfire Club, the Purifiers and introduces the Morlocks.


This is Us, Season 3 – NBC, CTV
September 25, 9 pm

Everyone’s favourite family drama returns for its third season with nary a teary eye in this 30 second teaser. This season promises hopeful moments: Kevin has found love with Beth’s cousin, Deja is going to stick around and the fans get to see — what is sure to be tearful — the early days of Rebecca and Jack’s relationship.


New Amsterdam, Season 1 – NBC, Global
September 25, 10 pm

This new medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin as New Amsterdam’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up bureaucracy and put patients first. Dr. Goodwin disrupts the status quo at this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital – the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the US under one roof.


Single Parents, Season 1 – ABC, Citytv
September 26, 9:30 pm

Single Parents is a new ensemble comedy that follows a group of single parents as they lean on each other to help raise their 7-year-old kids and try to maintain a semblance of a personal life outside of parenthood.


The Good Place, Season 3 – NBC, Global
September 27, 8 pm

One of TV’s smartest series returns for its third season with Eleanor, Tahani, Jason and Chidi getting a do-over at life. The four human subjects return to Earth from the Good/Bad place in afterlife-first to find out whether bad people can become good.


God Friended Me, Season 1 – CBC, CTV
September 30, 8:30 pm

Another modern and uplifting drama that follows Miles Finer, an outspoken atheist podcaster whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from God himself. Brought together by the ‘God account’, Miles teams up with Cara Bloom to investigate God’s friend suggestions and inadvertently help others in need.
